Emily Dumm Paraskevas

Emily Dumm Paraskevas, (2009), Materials Engineer, Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR)

 

Where did you attend college? What degrees do you hold?

I graduated from the University of Maryland in College Park (Class of 2013) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering.

What scholarships did you receive?

I was blessed to have my tuition, room and board, fees, and even my books covered by a combination of scholarships. I was awarded the full Banneker/Key Scholarship by the Honors College at the University of Maryland, the National Merit Scholarship from Northrop Grumman, and the Maryland Distinguished Scholarship by the Maryland Higher Education Commission.

What is your current position and what do you do?

I am currently employed as a Materials Engineer for the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). I work in the Polymers and Composites branch of our organization, specializing in carbon-fiber composites for unmanned Navy aircraft.

How did your Redeemer education prepare you for your course of study and your career?

In my current job, I am able to write clearly and concisely, as well as to express myself verbally in discussions, meetings, and presentations. My education in the trivium - grammar, logic, and rhetoric - has made me a well-rounded engineer more than any of my college courses were able to do. My engineering coursework expected writing and presentation skills from us as students, but did not provide us with tools to improve our skills. Fortunately, Redeemer had already given me a strong foundation on which to build.  As an engineering student, I successfully navigated a challenging set of math, science and engineering courses, but I don’t believe that success in my problem sets was what distinguished me among my classmates. Because of my Redeemer education, I had critical thinking, writing, and public speaking skills that set me apart from my peers. I was able to test out of my first English course and breezed through my next one. My professor asked me after class one day how I came to be so proficient in grammar and writing with my science background. To me, it’s clear that the foundation I received in grammar and logic helped train me to follow the rules of language and reason, which led into a love of nature’s laws as well.

How did your Redeemer education prepare you for life?

Most importantly, my walk with God has been so influenced by my time at Redeemer. From being surrounded by godly teachers to praying before class, I learned that being a Christian isn’t just something you do on Sunday mornings at church. From memorizing Scripture to understanding how Christianity fits into a context of world philosophies and religions, I began to internalize what it is to be a believer in a secular world and how to stay close to God through everything that has come my way.

I’ve also benefited from the small class size at Redeemer, which was foundational to my learning and to the development of my self-confidence, both personally and professionally. I made friendships at Redeemer that have lasted through my college years and up until today.

Joe Shifflet

Joe Shifflet, (2010) Chemical Engineer, Linde Group

 

Where did you attend college and what degree do you hold?

I graduated from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2014 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemical Engineering.

What scholarships did you receive?

I received a few academic scholarships, the Maryland Senatorial Scholarship, the Maryland House of Delegates Scholarship, the Forest Hill Recreation Council Scholarship and the Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors of Maryland Scholarship.

What is your current position and what do you do?

I am currently employed as a chemical engineer at the Linde Group, the world’s largest industrial gas and engineering company. I was accepted into their Engineering Skills Development Program (ESD), which is a two year rotational program. I have the opportunity to travel all over the country. For my current rotation, I am working as a CO2 engineer, performing plant optimization, and in project management and troubleshooting.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your Redeemer education?

It was through Redeemer’s Chemistry class that I became passionate about my current field of employment. Particularly, I remember anticipating “Miss Koz’s” class. She made learning chemistry awesome, and her passion undoubtedly rubbed off on me. In “Mr. C’s” physics and calculus classes, I discovered the complicated, yet fascinating, world of math. I did a little research, and figured out that chemical engineering would be the perfect major in college to combine my three favorite subjects of interest. The fact that I knew I wanted to study chemical engineering before graduating Redeemer, and the excitement I found through my teachers, gave me a huge head start in the chemical engineering program and allowed me to complete the program in four years. I know for a fact that my high school teachers played a major role in laying the foundations for my academic achievements in college.

How did your Redeemer education prepare you for studies/life/career?

Redeemer’s curriculum and faculty not only teach students the school material, but also how to study, which greatly helped and prepared me for the overwhelming amount of homework and projects I had as an undergraduate.  In high school, I was used to allocating a lot of time each night for studying. I learned to be organized and efficient with my time, which allowed for a smooth transition into the college workload. No matter what you study in college, knowing how to study and how to spend your time is over half the battle. These skills were invaluable throughout my time at UMBC and gave me the edge to graduate second in the chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering department at UMBC, which landed me multiple job offers when I graduated.

In addition to the quality education, Redeemer’s small class environment allowed for a close community of friends. I think my graduating class was particularly close, and we even have a summer cookout every year, so we can fellowship and catch up on all the exciting things we are accomplishing. I know these friendships will last long after college and am thankful for the relationships that I have with my Redeemer classmates.

Patrick Everett

Patrick Everett PT, DPT, MSAT, (2007) - Sport Physical Therapist, ProSport Physical Therapy

 

Where did you attend college?  What degree do you hold?

I attended the University of Maryland, College Park and hold a BS Degree in Kinesiology and both a Masters of Athletic Training and a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Shenandoah University.

What is your current position and what do you do? 

I am a Sport Physical Therapist at ProSport Physical Therapy in Newport Beach, CA.   I work on rehabilitation of injured athletes ranging from high school to professional.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your Redeemer education?  

The low student to teacher ratio allowed the individual focus I needed when I was not as academically driven. Redeemer provided me a writing background that made college level English easy; whereas, most others struggled and even had to retake classes.

How did your Redeemer education prepare you for your course of study and career? 

Redeemer really taught me the importance of a good education and how to learn rather than study for tests. This created a drive in me for learning which pushed me towards pursuing my college education, doctoral degree and continues today.

Kyle Chesser

Kyle Chesser (2006) – Sr. Tax Accountant at Arthur F. Bell Jr. Associates

 

Where did you attend college and what is your degree?

I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Liberty University and plan to start sitting for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam.

Did you receive any scholarships?

I received a small, but helpful, college scholarship for my academic performance in school and my SAT score.

What is your current position?

I work at Arthur F. Bell Jr. Associates, a mid-sized accounting firm in Hunt Valley, MD.  I have been working there for almost 4 years and was recently promoted to Senior Tax Accountant, where I work with clients regarding their tax situations and  preparing their tax returns.

How did Redeemer prepare you for life after High School?

The Redeemer program really benefitted me in many ways. The teachers encourage students to work hard and try new things.  At the time, I never would have thought my high school education was preparing me for success in college and life in general, but it truly did.  One of the strongest aspects of a Redeemer education is learning how to write well.   Throughout college, I used the curriculum Redeemer taught me for writing papers and I not only only received A's but my teachers told me they were thoroughly impressed with my writing skills.

Classical education was challenging and made me work for my grades but it thoroughly prepared me for college and career.

Stephanie Burke – Rappazzo (2008)  – Math Teacher Patapsco High School

 

Where did you study and what is your degree?

After graduating from Redeemer, I attended Towson University and graduated with a degree in Mathematics with a concentration in Secondary Education. I am now enrolled in Graduate School at UMBC and am working toward my Master's Degree in Mathematics in Secondary Education.

Did you receive any scholarships?

I was awarded an academic scholarship of half my tuition for all four years I was at Towson and during my junior and senior year, I was also awarded the Noyce Scholarship for STEM Teachers.

What is your current position?

I am currently in my third year as a math teacher at Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts in Baltimore County.  Teaching is a challenging, but extremely rewarding career and I learn and experience new things every day.

How did Redeemer prepare you for life after High School?

Redeemer definitely helped prepare me for college in a couple of different ways.  My writing skills were a step above my classmates throughout college, and my overall ability to take notes and study certainly aided in my success.  However, I think what helped most prepare me for college was the competitive atmosphere that was created among my classmates at Redeemer.  I was always challenged by my teachers and classmates to be the best that I could be.  We were able to encourage and challenge one another and this motivated me to work hard and be my best.  I strongly believe that this competitive nature was what helped me to do so well in college and in my career.

Danielle Gordy

Danielle Gordy (2011)  – Nursing student Towson University

 

Where and what are you currently studying?

Although I was introduced to many colleges and careers throughout high school, it took me awhile to figure out what I was most interested in pursuing as my career.  I have discovered I have a passion for health and am attending Towson University, working towards my BS degree in nursing. I plan to graduate in the Spring of 2016.  Upon graduation, I plan to continue my education and either specialize in orthopedics or become a nurse anesthetist.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your Redeemer education?

Nursing school can be very stressful at times and I do not know if I would have been able to get into the program if I had not attended Redeemer.  I learned how to manage my time and prioritize my work.   I have found balance is key. You do not want to always be working and studying leaving no time to do the things that you enjoy.  Although diligence and perseverance are very good character traits, I try not to make idols out of my grades and performance at school.  I recommend all students take the time to enjoy their high school years and high school sports, because you will occasionally wish that you could re-live some of those great memories.

Andrew Huneke

Andrew Huneke (2012)  Studying Electronic Media & Film, Towson University

& employed as a Production Assistant Fox 45, WBFF, Baltimore

 

Where and what are you currently studying? 

I attended Harford Community College. I graduated in May 2014 with an Associate’s degree in Mass Communication. I am currently attending Towson University working on a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Media and Film. Received the Transfer Achievement Scholarship.

Did you receive any scholarships?

I received the Honors Scholarship, and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, which is the National Honor Society.

What is your current position?

I am a Production Assistant at FOX 45, WBFF TV in Baltimore. As a PA, I am concerned mainly with studio work. Right now, I am only doing camera work. However, once I have completed my training, I will also be engaged in floor directing as well as teleprompter work and audio work.

I enjoy editing clips as well. I would like to be an editor at the station sometime soon.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your Redeemer education? 

The most beneficial aspect of the Redeemer education was the writing program. The assignments that we were given at Redeemer (especially Thesis, and the Apologetics paper), have made writing papers at college seem easy. Another aspect I feel is important is the fact that you have to make a lot of group presentations. It helped me with my public speaking skills not just at school, but professionally as well.  The fact that you have to do a lot of research and then defend your work is something that will happen a lot in the professional world.

Mitchell Most (2014) – Studying Atmospheric Science, Lyndon State College, Vermont

 

Where do you attend college?

I am currently attending Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vermont (Northeast Vermont)

What degree are you working towards?

I am working towards a degree in Atmospheric Sciences with a concentration in Broadcast Meteorology.

What scholarships did you receive?

I received honors, leadership, and academic scholarships from the college.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your Redeemer education?

The most beneficial aspect of my education at RCCS was the rigorous humanities. Because of the amount of writing I did throughout my years, and especially the training in writing, I was able to become a fantastic writer. As a result, it is easy for me to write any kind of paper I need to.  When the professor says, "I want you to write me a 3-5 page essay for next class," it is a breeze to do so. On the other hand, my friends and most of the other freshman I talk to are having issues with writing papers that are put together well, are coherent and logically sound. Thus, I have been sharing what I know to help my peers with their writing. In addition to this, I was also able to skip three English classes and be placed in the highest level English course in my first semester. 

How did Redeemer prepare you for what you are studying?

Redeemer allowed me to have a seamless transition into college and also allowed me to be on the track I wanted. Because of the academic demand and difficulty of the school, this first semester of college (and maybe even beyond) are, dare I say, easy. I finish all of my work early and my grades are outstanding. In relation to my second point, my major is one that is incredibly demanding in science and mathematics. A sizable portion of the Atmospheric Science majors in my college are on a 5-year graduation track because they have to take preliminary math and physics classes in order to understand the introductory Meteorology classes. Because of my background in physics and calculus in Redeemer, I was placed into the 4-year track with direct placement into college level calculus and physics. As it turns out, because of this and the English placement, I am already ahead of my graduation schedule in my first semester.

Leah Standiford-Murray (2004), Sr. Development Coordinator, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

 

Where did you attend college? What degrees do you hold? 

I graduated from Wingate University with a Bachelor of Science in Communications.

What scholarships did you receive?

I received the Who’s Who Student Award from Wingate University.

What is your current position and what do you do?

I am the Sr. Development Coordinator for the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences, Institute for Cell Engineering and McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In my current position, I manage a portfolio of 65 donors, plan and execute 5-7 University sponsored events per year that occur throughout the US, direct stewardship activity for the office and oversee gift processing.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your Redeemer education?

I noticed how much further ahead I was when I get to college. For example, my freshman year history book was the same one I had in 10th grade (my parents were thrilled about that!) and because of Thesis I was one of the few students who knew how to tackle a large project, find primary sources, create manageable timelines and structure information within large papers. My recommendation to current students is to stretch yourself with the schools you apply to.  I think you will be shocked at how well you are prepared.

How did your Redeemer education prepare you for college and career?  

Redeemer taught me how to think for myself. We were constantly challenged to dig for answers on our own, seeking truth before we formulate an opinion. That is a life-skill that carried me through college and continues to help me throughout my career.

Mark Shifflett (2005) Civil Engineer, Site Resources, Inc. 

 

Where did you attend college?  What degrees do you hold?

I went to Geneva College and earned my B.S. in engineering.

What is your current position and what do you do?

I'm currently a civil engineer and have my professional engineer's license (that means I get to put the letters PE after my name and feel all sophisticated and whatnot). The simplest way to describe what I do is with the words "land development." We make site's useable for owners and developers. It involves things like making sure the land drains, the underground utilities work, rainwater is handled properly, etc.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your Redeemer education? 

I definitely felt like I had an edge in college. I was much better at writing papers than my classmates. Having humanities was a big help because it is required at Geneva as well. So, for me, it was just a review, whereas, other student were seeing it for the first time.  The biology and chemistry classes were strong.  The physics and calculus courses were on par with the entry level college courses.  The science and math courses gave me a good base which was beneficial particularly because I became an engineer. Overall,  I know the academic demands were more rigorous than other high school options. The work ethic that you need to establish to get through Redeemer is what stuck with me through college and remains in me now in my career.

Lastly, the faculty did a good job of equipping me to handle the rigorous workload which was great preparation for college where there is a "weeding out" phase to see who can and can't handle the work.  Redeemer definitely gave me the work ethic and tools to succeed when faced with the need to handle it on my own.

Victoria Shifflett Fisher (2007) Student Therapist, Family and Children's Services of Central Maryland & working toward 2nd masters degree

 

Where did you attend college?  What degrees do you hold?

I received a B.A. degree in psychology and business administration, a double-major, from McDaniel College.   I also received an M.S. degree in gerontology and am now an adjunct lecturer, teaching graduate students in gerontology at McDaniel. After graduating, I worked with a home care agency as a community outreach liaison and as a care coordinator.  The aspect of my job that I loved the most was visiting the clients and their families in their homes. I decided to go back to school for counseling since I knew I wanted to work more closely with people, especially older adults.  In May 2015, I will have an M.A. degree in counseling.

Did you receive any scholarships? 

I went to McDaniel College with almost a full academic scholarship.

What is your current position and what do you do?

I am currently working as a student therapist at Family and Children's Services of Central Maryland as I earn clinical hours towards my license in counseling.  I have some older adult clients as well as women and children.  We primarily work with victims of domestic violence and child abuse, but I also have clients receiving general counseling.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your Redeemer education?

The aspect of my Redeemer education that was most influential was how well I was taught to write.  As a college freshman, all of my professors were impressed with my writing and were trying to convince me to major in their subject area since they took my writing as an indication of my ability to do well in a particular subject.  At Redeemer, we were challenged to work diligently and sometimes it seemed unnecessary to include every 'sentence opener' and 'decoration', but it really paid off as they now come naturally to me.

What was your favorite part of your Redeemer education?

This might seem biased, but my favorite thing about Redeemer is it is where I met my wonderful husband, Russell, in 7th grade.

Where do you attend college?

I attend University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus.

What degree are you working toward?

I am working toward a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Did you receive any Scholarships? 

I received the Presidential Distinguished Award from UMBC, and the OIA Dresher Family Scholarship.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your Redeemer education?  

Redeemer prepared me academically for college, it also provided a nurturing environment for my faith to grow and gain a strong foundation.

My Redeemer education especially prepared me for all of the humanities aspects of college, including writing papers. Redeemer has even “over prepared” me for my Political Science class.  The Professor has said I am too smart to be in his class. Also, the firm basis in logic and rhetoric has helped me through a wide variety of different classes.

Stephanie Snyder

Stephanie Snyder (2014) Studying Nursing at St. Joseph’s/St. Elizabeth’s, Indiana

 

Where do you attend college?

I'm attending a joint program with Saint Joseph’s College IN/ Saint Elizabeth's School of Nursing.

What are you studying?

I'm working toward a bachelors in science as well as my RN. I'm currently a student nurse through a hands on program that will afford me the opportunity to be involved with patients starting in my freshman year.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your Redeemer education?

Because of my education at Redeemer, I find it is easier for me to write papers with short deadlines.  And because of the excellence in science taught at RCCS, my science classes are easier to understand. Because of the civics and economics classes taught at RCCS, I'm able to understand our society and the U.S. government.  Logic, rhetoric, debate, and thesis prepared me to be able to defend and argue my personal views in a respectful way.
