The History of RCCS

In October 1994, Mrs. Betty Josenhans, a member of Redeemer Presbyterian Church and an experienced home educator, visited a Classical Christian school in Florida. Little did she know that what seemed like a trivial visit would change the lives of many people. She returned to Baltimore with a vision TO START a similar school and began discussing THIS IDEA with her pastor, Ron Standiford, and his wife Darby, who were already considering planting a school as a ministry of the church. Betty’s excitement became infectious. Plans began to be formulated. Committees met and decisions were being made to open school in the very near future. Unfortunately, Mrs. Josenhans was suddenly called home to be with the Lord. As a result of a fatal heart attack, Betty would not see her vision fulfilled. However, many family and church members continued the work in her stead.

By March 1996, a School Board had been established and several informational meetings held. The Board decided, through much prayer and reliance upon the Lord, to open school in the fall of 1996. The rural setting of Beachmont Farm was the perfect setting for a Christ-centered education. Surrounded by trees and fields, one could not help but be impressed with God’s glory. A goal of 30 students was established for the first year. By August 1996, 39 students were enrolled in grades Pre-K through 6th grade. In September 1996, Redeemer Classical Christian School (RCCS) launched its first school year offering grades Pre-K through 6th grade, using classical teaching methods, and a solid, Biblical foundation. As word reached into the community and surrounding churches, families saw the opportunity to combine challenging academics with a Christian world and life view. Interest in this new school increased rapidly.

In September 1997, RCCS began its 2nd year of operation with an enrollment of 112 students in grades Pre-K through 7th grade - nearly tripling the first year’s enrollment. It was very clear that God’s hand was guiding the school and meeting a pressing need in the community. During the following years, a new grade was added each year until the school had its first graduating class in 2003.

In 2005 (its 9th year of operation), RCCS sought and earned accreditation from the Mid-Atlantic Association of Colleges and Schools.

God continues to bless the ministry of Redeemer Classical Christian School. By 2006, the school reached near its capacity with almost 300 students in Pre-K through 12th grade. With such rapid growth, many changes were needed. First, many teachers and staff were added to support the school. In addition, the school hired much needed Deans, one each for the Grammar and Upper Schools to provide direction and support. In addition, Business/Facilities Manager, Guidance Counselor, and other support staff have been added throughout the years. There was also a need for classroom facilities, resulting in several modular buildings being added to include Science Labs, a Computer Lab, a Lunch Room and a Media Center (Library). These temporary buildings will serve the school until permanent structures are built, as God provides.

In addition, numerous programs were added. The school now has choirs, bands, an annual drama production, sports teams, a 19th Century Ball, a Junior Ring Cruise, a Senior trip to Europe, etc. Who would have thought that a 39-student school in 1996 would lead us to where we are today? Only by the grace of God can this happen!
